ACADEMICS

Welcome to Fourth Grade!

This year students will be busy studying many new and exciting things.  Listed below are some of the main topics we will be studying this year.

RELIGION – Fourth grade will focus on Commandments, Beatitudes,

The Rosary, and many Advent and Lenten practices.  

LANGUAGE ARTS- This year in reading we will be studying many novels in addition to reading stories from our reader.  We will be working on comprehension strategies, vocabulary and elements of fiction. The Accelerated Reader program will continue.  Students will need 12 points with at least a 70% average.  Mrs. Dietz will be teaching parts of speech in English and I will be using the Rebecca Sitton spelling list to teach spelling.

MATH – Students will use multiplication and division facts to solve larger math problems.  We’ll also tackle some algebra and geometry.

SOCIAL STUDIES – Fourth grade studies the regions of the United States with a focus on Kentucky.

HOMEWORK

Students will have homework Monday thru Thursday.  There is usually not homework given on the weekend.  This is a time that may be used for longer assignments and projects.  Homework should last 45 minutes to 1 hour on average.  Have a set place and time for homework each night.  Students should have tools such as pencils and pens within easy reach. 

There will be math homework every night.  Children should be able to do the math by themselves.  Parents or guardians should check and review if necessary. 

The amount of time spent studying spelling will be different for each child. The student should keep his list in a handy spot such as the refrigerator.  The child should not only be able to spell the word, but should be able to write the word in a sentence.  Once a student has mastered a word on the weekly review it can be removed from the list.  Incorrect word from the weekly review should be adde4d to study.  This will make an ever-changing list.  Remember students are responsible for all previous words.  The skill practiced for homework will be the skill tested at the end of the week. 

Students should read every night.  This may be an AR book or any material they find interesting.  When studying vocabulary, they should be able to use the word in a sentence. 

Science vocabulary will be given throughout the chapter.  Mastering these can be difficult for some. Studying for the test should be done over a week or two depending on your child.  They can always study vocabulary or the review questions. 

Studying for Social Studies should also be done over a longer period.
